Preparing to be the best

Learn all of the rudiments.

Know and recognize most styles and be able to play numerous variations of each.

Have a thorough understanding of rhythmic note values and be able to sight read.

Practice with a metronome extensively to greatly improve your internal sense of time.

Play with live bands and sit in on jam sessions as much as possible.

Work on 4-way (or 2-way) independence on the drums.

Learn how to tune your drums for the optimum sound and learn the variables that affect the sound.

Know the name players of the industry and their contributions to the drum world.

Listen to all types of music you can and listen intensely to how the drummer plays.

Practice, practice practice. Enough said there.

Know and understand that attitude is everything in the business and it should not be underestimated.

Understand that groove comes first, then chops. Always make it feel good first and foremost.

Know and understand that it takes a work ethic to be the best. You must work hard.

Surround yourself with successful and/or motivated people. You'll be amazed on how much they rub off on you.

Ditch those friends that are negative and lazy. Stay positive and shoot for the stars!
